The New Music school is stunning, a great facility.
Being part of the process was a completely new experience for me – how will music be taught in 30 years time? What size will the school be? Will the school require a radio or TV station? With those sort of questions it was obvious that the building had to deliver a degree of flexibility and be fit for how we anticipate using it in the present.
The architects were really impressive, there was a great deal of consultation between them and the Music Department; the peripatetic teachers were also involved, between them they work in over 60 schools and have plenty of experience of what works and what doesn’t! It’s still early days, however, I can say that everyone in the department is really excited about working in the new building and developing new approaches to how we teach and perform.
