A Memorable Visit to Portsmouth Cathedral - The Cathedral of the Sea...

On Wednesday, 20th November, the Chapel Choir embarked on a journey to Portsmouth Cathedral, affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Sea. This was the Choir’s first visit to the historic site to sing a service of Choral Evensong.

Portsmouth Cathedral, located in the heart of Old Portsmouth, is steeped in maritime history. Its origins trace back to the 12th century when it was established as a chapel dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury. Over centuries, the building evolved from a modest chapel to its designation as a cathedral in 1927, becoming a symbol of Portsmouth's seafaring heritage. Its design beautifully reflects its coastal setting, with nautical motifs and a light-filled interior that evokes a sense of openness and tranquility.

Music for the service included Preces and Responses by Herbert Sumsion, Psalm 73, set to a chant by Luke Flintoft, resonated with rich tonal colour in the cathedral’s warm acoustic. The Canticles in A minor by Thomas Tertius Noble brought a poignant depth to the service, and the Choir’s rendition of Sir Henry Wood’s beloved anthem, O Thou, the Central Orb, was a highlight of the service, soaring through the sacred space with radiant clarity. The Cathedral Clergy, including the Canon Precentor, commended the vivid and expressive psalm singing.

Looking ahead, the Chapel Choir will sing Choral Evensong at Winchester Cathedral on Wednesday 29th January at 5.30pm. This promises to be another fantastic opportunity for the Chapel Choir to perform in one of England’s most iconic sacred spaces.
