L6th Form Economics pupils enjoyed a very special and unique experience visiting Google and Barclays Investment Bank...

Three cancelled trains did not dampen the first stop off at Google offices in Central St Giles, where the brilliant Tom Cannon gave the pupils a tour of the impressive offices, offering many pit stops at various ‘fuelling’ stations. Having wandered past a massive gym, yoga lessons and several massage rooms, pupils commented that they would actually pay to work there! After a run down of Google’s history and outline of current projects and business arms, two incredible Economics graduates took us through their typical day. Mili Sanwalka (Strategy and Operations at DeepMind, PHD Brown University) outlined the role she is playing with regards to AI, in effect helping to shape our future world. Tom Sherwood (BA/MA Lancaster) then outlined his role at YouTube and the link it has to his previous career in TV and his Economics Degree. Both described their interview process, 17 and 8 interviews respectively, but also gave key tips to securing a career at Google.

A quick trip on the Elizabeth Line and 20 minutes later saw us at Barclays Investment Bank signing our NDAs before being escorted to the Forex Trading Floor, courtesy of Stephen Dainton (Co-Head of Global Markets). It was really interesting to meet Catherine, a recent Bristol University graduate (BSc Economics). Catherine introduced us to some of the Forex traders who were glued to their trading screens in the wake of the interest rate decision and US economic data. Catherine also gave the pupils top advice for securing internships at banks. It was then off to a meeting with Tarun Mather, MD of Rates Sales and EU Management who outlined his 27-year career in Banking before asking our pupils to ask him absolutely anything about it. Questions ranged from ‘How will AI affect your role’ to ‘What car do you drive ?’.

Thank you to Katie Owen, AVP & Executive Assistant for organising everything. WOW what a day!
