A brilliant evening of monologues rounded up a strange, but incredible year for the performing artists at King’s.
Due to restrictions on rehearsals and assessments affecting all year groups, monologues have allowed our pupils to take part in co-curricular drama, and finally perform to an audience, albeit a livestreamed one. At the beginning of the Summer term, the pupils chose monologues that would challenge and push their performance skills with the only stipulation of being between 2 and 3 minutes when performed. I was impressed with the range of playwrights, styles and genres of theatre chosen, which made for an exciting evening in the Hauser & Wirth Recital Hall. This was the first livestreamed event for the Performing Arts Department, and I am extremely pleased with how it went. The opportunity to perform in a different venue certainly brought out the best in our performers, with each one “upping their game” for the final performance.
I have been so impressed with their work ethic amidst assessments, sport and other extra-curricular activities. Learning a monologue is a difficult task. There are no other people to bounce your lines off of, but their dedication outside of rehearsals to line learning and applying the advice given must be commended. The evening would not have been possible with the support of Maggie King throughout the rehearsal process, and both Lluc Tupman and Naomi Warren for managing the live stream. Huge thanks to you all.
I am looking forward to a time when we can rehearse as a cast, without restrictions and prepare for the whole school production in September.
