This year, more than any other, we recognise the importance of having a positive mindset throughout November.
Today we have launched the Gratitude Diaries, whereby all pupils will reflect on something positive or something they have enjoyed during that day. Please encourage them to reflect on their day at home and squeeze out some positive things, so that by the end of the month, it has become much easier and they are more in this habit. The diaries also include the option to do some mindful colouring and some uplifting quotes.
What are the diaries for?
Scientists have clear evidence that being grateful every day changes your perspective from thinking negatively about things to having a more positive outlook. This is more important than ever at the moment, when the news is often quite grim. Doing this over a prolonged period makes us feel happier.
How do I do this?
Pick out the most enjoyable bits of your day. It will be hard to start off with if you are not used to doing it, so start with just one thing. It is important to remind ourselves what is good in our lives - right here and now.
Are there long term benefits?
Yes. Material goods like a new car or house or hoping for a high status job or sporting achievement, give us only short term pleasure until after a few months, we are back wanting a new material desire or work goal. Focusing on what we appreciate now has been proven to make us happier.
