Our Harvest Service saw generous donations to the Bruton Larder foodbank...
This year’s Harvest Service saw pupils generously donating a wide variety of food towards the Brue Larder (the Bruton foodbank) situated just a stone’s throw from St Mary’s Church where we held our Harvest Service. During the Harvest Service we were pleased to welcome David from the Brue Larder. During an interview, David explained how the Brue Larder was formed, what a typical week looks like for them, the numerous ways they have helped a variety of people, and what motivates him and the team of volunteers. It was inspiring and eye-opening to learn about the local need there is for foodbanks.
Our Harvest Service also saw us give thanks to God for all the amazing food that he generously gives us. Moreover, we pondered the epic truth found in the Bible in 1 John 3:16-18. The big question was this: how do we define love? Our Bible passage told us that love can’t be defined or demonstrated in just ‘words or speech.’ Rather, love is demonstrated and defined in ‘action’. We see the perfect example in the action of God: he has seen us in our need and sent Jesus Christ who acted to help us by ‘laying down his life for us.’ It’s a beautiful truth. As we see such love, we too ‘ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.’ We should act to help those in need (e.g. food poverty) by laying down gifts (food, time, energy etc) from the riches of our lives. As the passage says, ‘If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?’
So then, our Harvest Service was a great time to pause, give thanks, reflect, and seek to commit ourselves to loving action.
