On Wednesday 10th November, the Chapel Choir visited Exeter Cathedral to sing a service of Choral Evensong for the first time in over 20 months!
The Chapel Choir last performed at Exeter Cathedral in the Easter Term 2019, and it was super to make a return visit. The Chapel Choir were once again warmly welcomed by the Cathedral staff, including the Canon Treasurer. The music for the service included Responses by Sanders, Psalm 53 and 54 set to chants by Flintoft and Howells. The canticles were sung to Stanford’s fine setting in C and the service concluded with the atmospheric anthem 'Geistliches Lied' by Brahms.
The Chapel Choir enjoyed the general acoustic in the building and hearing the organ accompaniments for the first time. For many of the pupils it was their first experience of singing a service of Choral Evensong and it is not an easy thing to do! My congratulations go to all those involved. It was lovely to have the Cathedral retweet the Music Department, thanking us for our beautiful singing and inviting us to return once again in the future.
We were fortunate enough to have several parents, an Old Brutonian and other supporters in the congregation who were also extremely complimentary about the singing of the Chapel Choir, with one visitor remarking that it sounded ‘very professional’. It is wonderful to be singing a termly Choral Evensong once again after a long enforced break due to the pandemic.
