The Winter Concert: A Celebration of Music and Talent...
The Winter Concert was a resounding success, showcasing the talent and dedication of musicians at King’s across a diverse and engaging programme. The Orchestra opened the concert with a moving rendition of the Forrest Gump Suite (arr. Custer), setting a warm and nostalgic tone for the evening. This was followed by the Military Band, who captivated the audience with their lively performances of Abba on Broadway and Pixar Movie Favourites (both arranged by Brown), demonstrating their versatility and precision.
The Piano Trio offered a charming interlude with Gossec’s Gavotte, highlighting the delicate interplay between the instruments. The Flute Ensemble followed with a heartwarming performance of I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas (arr. Berlin), perfectly capturing a festive spirit. The School Choir delivered a trio of delightful pieces, starting with Rutter’s Christmas Lullaby, and continuing with the upbeat Lullaby of Broadway (arr. Althouse) and the soulful Lovely Day (arr. Gibson). Their harmonious voices resonated beautifully, bringing joy to all in attendance. The Saxophone Ensemble added a playful touch with their rendition of The Pink Panther (arr. Miller), while the Trombone Ensemble delivered a stirring performance of Gaudete (arr. van Gulik), showcasing their bold and expressive sound. The Chamber Choir impressed with two contrasting pieces: the reflective No Small Wonder (Edwards) and the timeless My Soul, There Is A Country (Parry). Both pieces highlighted the choir's dynamic range and emotive delivery.
The Groove Band brought energy and rhythm to the stage with their renditions of Blue Rondo Alla Turk (arr. Law) and The Homecoming (Abdullah Ibrahim). Their performances were met with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the audience's appreciation for their vibrant sound. The String Ensemble performed a fun arrangement of Rather Be (arr. Winkworth), blending classical and contemporary styles seamlessly. The Chapel Choir followed with the serene Beati Quorum Via (Stanford) and the majestic O Thou, The Central Orb (Wood), bringing a sense of reverence and beauty to the evening. Closing the concert with flair, the Big Band energized the audience with Alright, Okay, You Win (arr. Tanner) and I’m Still Standing (arr. Murtha). Their lively and polished performance left the audience cheering for more.
The evening was a true celebration of the dedication and talent of pupils. My thanks go to all the staff involved and my congratulations go to all involved in making the Winter Concert a spectacular success!
