A Sports Roundup of Week 2...

Hockey vs Clayesmore

The boys’ hockey teams enjoyed a good block fixture against Clayesmore on Saturday.

Team of the Week
1st XI - Won 6-0
Man of the Match - Theo

The 1st XI boys have had a fantastic week and are maintaining their aim to improve each time they play. The week started with an excellent 7-2 away victory over Blundell’s in R1 of the Independent Schools Hockey Cup in what were some awful weather conditions. They followed this up with another excellent display of attacking hockey as they defeated Clayesmore 6-0 with goals being scored by George, Aled , Sam (2) and Man of the match Theo (2). On another day the shoreline could have been greater still, however the boys know they must continue to work on being clinical as well as their transition from attack to defence.

Team of the Week 4th - Won 23-19
Player of the Match - Olivia

The 4th VII started their first match of the season with enthusiasm and determination again a strong King’s Taunton side. The first quarter was strongly contested with both teams passing and moving around the court well. By half time the score was 10-11 but despite being behind the girls dug deep, and worked on staying tighter in defence and they began to turn it around. The girls continued to work hard and managed to beat King’s Taunton 5 goals to 2 in the 3rd quarter. By the last quarter the girls had found the stride and pulled away from the opposition with the final score being 23-19. It was a closely fought game and it could have gone either way, but the 4th VII played brilliantly as a team and thoroughly deserved to win in the end. A brilliant game and a promising start to our season.

Rugby 7s Tournament

King’s Bruton hosted their annual 7’s Tournament and looked the strongest side throughout the day. After beating Prior Park 3 tries to 1, we then faced a young Clayesmore team and our experienced players such as Alex, Ben and Charlie played heads up and mature rugby, which earnt us the win. Just before lunch we battled against Milton Abbey and struggled in the first half to play any type of flowing rugby. However, a great second half performance meant we came out on top. Final score 5 tries to 1.

After a quick lunch break, we had the top of the table clash against Queen’s Taunton. Queen’s scored first, however, physicality from Oliver, Rian and Alex kept us in the game. Rocco then scored a try against his former school to make it 1-1.  Rian finished a well worked team try to finish the game 2 tries - 1.

Unfortunately after a few Injuries to some key players, we lost our final game to Well’s Cathedral 3 tries to 2. However, myself and Mr Gibbins were extremely proud of the team and well done to all the 5th Form that made their senior debuts.

Men of the Tournament - Sandy and Alex

Ben Hawley - Head of Rugby
