Following an Assembly earlier in the term, where teachers showed their favourite books to pupils to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure, we decided to have a pop up book store to give pupils the opportunity to buy the books which were recommended.
It proved popular with pupils who enjoyed the chance to have a good browse through books which they might not normally have picked up whilst in a book shop.
"Being found dead in the water gardens of Giverney, where Monet did much of his painting, is not your usual scene for a murder mystery. Having been recommended by Mr Godfrey in a School Assembly to highlight the joy of reading, Michel Bussi’s ‘Black Water Lilies’ has proved a hit with the pupils and has sold most copies in our Pop Up Book Sale. The classic novel ‘Catch 22’ by Joseph Heller was the most popular 6th Form choice, being recommended as one of the Headmaster’s favourite novels – he held up his battered copy from the 1980s. A story that centres around US airmen in Italy during the Second World War, it is clever in that the story is told several times over but from different perspectives, giving the reader an empathy. It is also about the brutality and horror of war: always relevant and an important message to hear." - Alison Grant - Deputy Head
"I think it is a good idea to have a pop up book store at King's. I bought two books and the Assembly inspired me to read books that weren't usually my preferred genre." - 4th Form Pupil
Our next pop up book sale will be in the Summer Term.
