Sunday 27th January 2019 and four members of King’s Bruton Common Room took part in the 33rd 'Tough Guy' event in Perton, Wolverhampton.
The event is designed to test participants physically and mentally and Paul Charlton, Craig Barrow, Mark Hambleton and Will Stainton took up the challenge in June 2018 when they signed up, paid their entry fees and started their training. Between them, they covered four age groups but were determined to run together and as a team.
The event didn’t disappoint and certainly lived up to its name, 1500 participants from 27 countries tackled 8 miles of running but with 300 obstacles thrown in for fun. The biting January wind also gave the event an extra element of challenge. The obstacles included concrete tunnels, lots of climbing and jumping, lots of water (very, very, very cold!), mud, more mud, fire, electric shocks, tyres, running up and down and up and down hills, more climbing, crawling under barbed wire, rope bridges…….
We all finished in 3½ hours and we were delighted to have finished as a team and to record a reasonable time. Hypothermia was kicking in at the end but it was all worth it as we have raised over £1500 for Help for Heroes & CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).
Our thanks to all our sponsors, friends and family who came to support us and thanks to Jim Byrne for driving us there and back. If you have never done this event visit it on YouTube or Facebook and sign up you won’t regret it.
Would we all do it again?? Yes! We will be going back in 2020 and we are happy to extend our team to more staff who want to be 'Tough Guys'!
