There are many after school activities on offer to pupils, and one of them is silversmithing.
We have some 4th Form girls who have chosen to do this activity. Pupils have been learning how to hammer and texture the surface of steel. This week, pupils made a bangle. We used pewter as it is similar in texture to silver. Pupils hammered one side of their bangle and letter stamped the other. It was wonderful to watch the shine of the metal start to show through as pupils used the emery sticks and wire wool to file and polish. They did really well, and all produced some beautiful bangles.
Next week, we will be using copper, brass and steel to make dog tags and bag tags. Pupils will use the saws for the first time, to cut out shapes and will learn how to use metal files. All of this is good practice in learning how to use the tools and how to hold and manoeuvre pieces of metal on the bench peg before we move onto using real sterling silver.
