An enjoyable 5^th Form Art Trip to Bristol...

On Tuesday 23^rd January our artists travelled to Bristol for an inspirational day of gathering, recording, and connecting themes relevant to their individual exam projects. Our artists were split into two groups to allow for a more tailored experience including the opportunity to rotate between galleries and printmaking workshop throughout the day. The rainy weather was not about to put a dampener on our active tour of the largest city in the southwest.  

At the Bristol City Museum and Gallery, pupils began by embarking upon the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 exhibition. This show presented 100 images selected from around 50,000 international entries. Providing a glimpse into our beautiful yet fragile natural world. Beyond this, pupils had a chance to explore three floors of exhibits, including Egyptian artefacts, Impressionist paintings, a Modern Art collection, Natural history alongside a fascinating new exhibition called, Conceal/ Reveal which aims to expose the hidden stories, and challenges preconceptions in art. 

Moving our way back down to the harbourside, we visited the Arnolfini’s latest presentation of Ethiopia’s leading contemporary artist Elias Sime, in his first major show in Europe, titled Elias Sime- Eregata እርጋታ. We were given an insightful exhibition introduction by one leading assistants who summarised the ideas and processes behind the works. As Elias Sime explores our relationship with technology as he interweaves recycled materials to create relief panels using circuit boards, wires, and keyboards to reclaim and re-examine our relationship with technology.  

To conclude our Bristol experience we rotated between a morning/ afternoon two-hour printmaking workshop at Centre Space Studios. Our artists partook in a workshop run by printmaker Victoria Willmott sharing insights into her lino stamp printing process, along with sharing her past works by encouraging our artists to consider adding narrative to their own work. After a step-by-step demonstration pupils turned their hands towards creating a concertina book that captured objects, symbols, and text as a starting point to their exam inquiries. 

This was a memorable day exploring contemporary exhibitions along with a unique opportunity to create work at an independent artist run studio in the beating heart of the city.
