On Wednesday 2nd October, the Chapel Choir sang at the Memorial Service of Air Vice Marshal, Michael Robinson CB, held in the Quire at Wells Cathedral.
Michael was a pupil at King’s from 1940-44 (Priory House). He was later a Cold War bomber pilot who commanded a V-Bomber squadron that carried Britain’s strategic nuclear deterrent during the 1960s. Michael’s last visit to King’s was as a guest at the Commemoration Service in May 2019. Following the service he requested that when the time came, the Chapel Choir would sing at his Memorial Service. He had a passion for music and spoke of three choral works he would like to have included at the service: 'Sanctus' from Fauré Requiem, 'Ave Verum' as set to music by Mozart and 'Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine' the final chorus from J S Bach’s setting of the St John Passion. The text of which being highly appropriate for a service of remembrance:
Rest in peace, you sacred limbs,I shall weep for you no more,
rest in peace, and bring me also to rest.
The grave that is allotted to you
and contains no further suffering,
open heaven for me and shuts off hell.
This service marked the first public performance given by the Chapel Choir this academic year. With challenging music to prepare, the Chapel Choir worked hard during the first four weeks of term to master the music in preparation. The Chapel Choir rose to the occasion and performed with dignity. Ian Robinson, Michael’s son, was most appreciative to the Chapel Choir for their contribution to the Memorial Service.
