Old Brutonian, Charlotte Elway (Priory 2016-21) is raising funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation...
Hello, my name is Charlotte Elway, I was at King’s in Priory House from 2016-2021, and was Head of House in my final year. I am now about to graduate Nottingham Trent University with an undergraduate degree in BSc Psychology (Forensic). This summer I am acting as a Challenge Leader for a student trek to Everest Base Camp in aid of Meningitis Research Foundation.
From starting my Psychology journey at King's, and continuing Psychology at undergrad, I strongly believe in the power of research and the potential to transform lives through scientific advancement. The Meningitis Research Foundation's work is vital, saving lives and improving outcomes for those affected by meningitis. Supporting their work contributes to the development of better prevention strategies, improved treatments, and ultimately, the hope of eradicating meningitis through a global vaccine.
Meningitis is a sudden and severe illness that can lead to life-altering consequences. After children, students, particularly those in their first year of university living in close quarters, are the most vulnerable groups to the virus. The statistics are alarming, with one in four 15-19 year olds carrying the meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis, compared to one in ten of the broader UK population. This fact hits close to home for me, given the boarding school environment, and my time at university, underscoring the importance of supporting research and prevention efforts.
I really want to make a difference for the charity, and of course want to be able to stand in the shadow of the tallest mountain in the world. I will be unable to do this if I can’t achieve my target! Any support from the King's Bruton or the Old Brutonian communities, either through spreading the word or any other means, would be immensely appreciated. Your contribution, no matter the size, will go a long way in supporting myself and the charity, and will motivate me during the toughest parts of the trek.
