Our visit to Tate Britain on Wednesday 26th involved our 5th Form GCSE artists and the U6th Form History of Art group.
The day began with the 5th Form split into three groups with a member of staff and a 6th Former allocated to each of the groups. Selected works were then visited with the member of staff breaking the ice with a presentation and Q&A session. For example Mr Spilsbury looked at two key works illustrating Lady Macbeth, a set text. Following this the U6th Form pupils gave a presentation on a piece of work which they had prepared. This was quite a challenge for them, engaging not only our own pupils but also members of the public who were drawn to their presentations. The 6th Form then went to visit the Turner Prize in preparation for an essay and the 5th Form were able to explore works independently which related to the areas they are exploring in their final coursework project.
The following day, on Thursday, we were pleased to welcome Silvia Spilsbury to the Art Department to run a Millinery Workshop. Mrs Spilsbury delivered the workshop to enrich the curriculum of our U6th Form artists. She brought with her an assortment of her own creations along with pieces from Bath Theatrical. Hat blocks and prepared hat bases gave our pupils an opportunity for creative exploration as they experimented with techniques and ideas linked to their own work. The workshop was presented in the main studio so that other groups could share in the experience. Photos from the trip and the workshop can be seen in the album below.
