King's is pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for our new Music School as part of our 500th Anniversary Celebrations in 2019.
Building works on this exciting new facility are due to start this summer, ready for 2019. The new Music School will open up the historic heart of the School where education first began nearly 500 years ago in 1519. Levitt Bernstein, the architects behind the design are keen to create "a strong physical and visual connection with the historic fabric of the surrounding buildings and with the town of Bruton on the opposite bank of the River Brue." Levitt Bernstein have conceived the building as the fourth side of the old school courtyard. The squash court building will be remodelled into a new auditorium with a suite of teaching, rehearsal and support spaces on two levels connecting to it. The new Music School will develop the idea of a ‘walled enclosure’ by continuing the existing natural stone boundaries to the north and west into the new courtyard. These walls will also mark a new route by linking the different landscapes around the edge of the building. A modest stone tower will complete the composition and signal the new entrance, joining two other historic towers in the vicinity. The landscape in the existing old school courtyard will be improved to create a high quality focal amenity space for the school, linking the new architectural elements with the old. More information about the architects' design can be read here. A video outlining the vision for the new Music School can be watched below.
