On Tuesday 5th October, 32 of our international pupils had the promised day out in Bath.
The main aim was cultural, so they were equipped with a photo challenge and a quiz to focus the mind, but there was, of course, time for a little pleasant wandering and a visit to the shops. The first stop in the town, nestling in a valley of the Roman province of Britannia, was Aquae Sulis, the Roman Baths, which always surprise pupils as they are so incredibly preserved. Those who had already visited the Baths walked uphill to the Assembly Rooms, which is the venue of the incredible Fashion Museum. Here, the pupils were afforded a close-up look at original costumes dating from Shakespearean times, through the multiple displays of day-wear and the high fashion of Georgian and Regency times, and right the way through the history of the shoe.
From there, a short walk to the Circus and the Royal Crescent gave them a picture of the architectural splendour of the city in its pale Bath stone (they also learnt that Buckingham Palace is built from Bath stone). Our Chinese pupils, afterwards, treated themselves to a little home cooking in a Chinese restaurant, and the others took themselves around the town centre, enjoying the freedom, the chance to spend time together and get to know one another and, happily, the rather pleasant weather! Jonathan and Leo decided that the city centre experience was rather overwhelming and retired to Parade Gardens near the weir and Pulteney Bridge for a rest and a chat. Home and dry by 3.30pm, it was a lovely day out. We have some fun photos and the quiz was won by a group of Wellesley girls with 8/10 questions answered correctly.
