Our Prefects spoke to the whole school about Black History Month...

School Prefects, Tia, Rafe and Amelia, were passionate about speaking to the whole school in Assembly, to set a tone and recognise the lives of black people who have made a huge contribution in society. Some excerpts are below:

Amelia, the Head Girl told us: "In the past, it has been all too easy to overlook these achievements, and so, it is our focus, in October, to recognise and celebrate their work." She also made the point that "as a school, we cannot think that we are somehow in a bubble, where racism does not impact us. So, this October, teachers have been sent lesson ideas and pupils have designed posters with a focus on black achievements."

Tia, a School Prefect, explained that Black History Month has been recognised in the UK since 1987.

Rafe, the Deputy Head Boy stated "It is important to recognise the complexity of the black experience, we are a majority white school, many of us have not and will not experience racism in our lives. So, you may be wondering, does Black History Month apply to me, does it apply to the wider King’s community? Simply, yes, yes it does. So this October, this Black History Month, raise questions, discuss the posters of black pioneers that are on display in your boarding houses, speak to the departmental reps, and if you take only one thing from this morning’s assembly - let it be to educate yourself and to recognise the truly outstanding achievements that black people have contributed to our society."
