4th Form pupils enjoyed a trip to the Dorset coast as part of their GCSE Geography fieldwork...
On Wednesday 8th June, 54 pupils from the 4th Form travelled to the Dorset coastline to complete the physical element of their GCSE Geography fieldwork. After close to 2 hours on the coach, pupils were raring to go by the time we got to Swanage and, after a briefing from the Geography Department, began measuring sediment build-up on each side of the wooden groynes on the beach to investigate whether or not longshore drift was occurring. Despite some ominous clouds we escaped the worst of the weather and pupils were able to spend the morning collecting the data they needed. After a break for lunch (and an ice cream!), we travelled on to Studland, where pupils spent some time exploring the sand dunes and practicing some more fieldwork techniques, all within site of Old Harry Rocks. The data, that pupils collected over the day, will be analysed and written up over their next few lessons, and they will be required to answer questions on this in their GCSE exams next summer.
It was great to be able to get back out doing fieldwork after it hasn’t been possible over the last two years, and I would like to thank the pupils for their enthusiasm and hard work throughout the day.
