On Thursday 7th November, the senior mathematicians of the 5th Form and 6th Form participated in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.
25 multiple choice questions incorporating all aspects of Mathematics from algebra to geometry gradually getting harder through the paper. These questions normally need high ingenuity and strong problem solving ability. Correct answers gained 4 marks, incorrect ones lose a mark to discourage guessing.
Llewelyn and Adam from the L6th both enjoyed the paper, saying ‘it was rather challenging' and 'the last ten questions were even harder' but I’m not sure we believe their comment that they were 'only able to answer a couple'. Favorite questions were those involving shapes and angles.
Adam thought he had excelled in a question involving a square piece of paper folded in half with a hole punched in the corners, the answers were different pictures of what the paper might look like if it were folded out.
Overall the challenge was a great experience and we await the results with bated breath.
