On Sunday, the L6th Form Geographers returned to King's following a very busy weekend on Exmoor, writes Emily Corrigan, Head of Geography.
On Friday we left King's and headed to Callow Rock Quarry, a working quarry that supplies much of the limestone to the south west. The pupils asked lots of interesting questions about the impacts of the quarry on the environment as well as the local community. Following this we headed to the top of Cheddar Gorge in the sunshine to learn about the underlying geology and the way that the gorge was formed.
On Saturday, the pupils woke up in the YHA hostel in Exford, and headed to the source of the River Holford to investigate how the width, depth and velocity of a river varies downstream. In the afternoon the pupils had a go at paddle boarding and kayaking on Wimbleball Lake. Following a busy day the pupils wrote up their work in the evening back at the hostel.
On Sunday, we went mountain biking in Horner, this was an exhausting but enjoyable experience and fun was had by all. We ended the weekend at the Valley of the Rocks investigating how the size of material on a scree slope affects the gradient of the slope.
We had a brilliant weekend and all the pupils worked hard practicing their fieldwork skills, data interpretation and analysis of results. An album of photos from the weekend can be seen below.
