An Evening of Mathematical Delights...

On Tuesday 31st January, we held, what will hopefully become a regular event: an “Evening of Mathematical Delights”. Holgate lecturer Jonny Griffiths talked first to 4th Form and 5th Form pupils about the “Dot Problem,” which led to considerations of parity and strange chains of numbers. After a break for refreshments, where the mathematical discussions continued over tasty cakes and sausage rolls, it was the turn of the Lower 6th and Upper 6th pupils. Their talk was about “Tiling” and took us into the realm of wallpaper patterns: mathematicians have categorised these and have counted how many different kinds of patterns are possible!

Everyone had a great evening.
