The King's Bruton U16 Girls have made history. Henry Eriksson, Director of Hockey writes of how the girls have been crowned National Indoor Hockey Champions following the England Hockey U16 Super Sixes tournament held at Bromsgrove School.
Having enjoyed a fantastic season to date, comfortably winning the County and Regional rounds before Christmas, the King's Bruton girls knew that the National Finals would be a much tougher task with some very large hockey playing schools present at the finals. Placed in a group alongside St George's College Weybridge, Kent College, Malvern College and Egglescliffe School, King's looked to secure a top two placing in the group to qualify for the semi finals.
In the opening match, St George's College proved to be a tough opponent as King's started slowly. However they improved in the second half as the match ended 1-1. This made the next two fixtures versus Kent College and Malvern College very important and King's played some good indoor in these matches to secure 3-1 and 4-0 victories against Kent College and Malvern respectively. Ending day one on seven points meant that qualification to the semi finals was already secured with other results going in King's favour.
Day two began early with a 9am match versus Egglescliffe School. Despite being early, King's scored some excellent goals to win 8-0, however this was not enough to top the group as St George's had a better goal difference by one goal. This meant that King's would line up against a strong Repton team in the semi final. Having managed to return to the hotel for some rest and downtime, King's faced Repton in what turned out to be an excellent game of indoor hockey. However, King's produced their best performance of the season as Repton couldn't cope with the defensive pressure applied by King's and the speed at which they moved the ball; as a result King's ran out 4-2 winners. In the final, King's produced yet another fantastic performance as they blew Cranleigh away with a superb demonstration of indoor hockey as they won 4-0 to secure the title.
I couldn't be prouder of the girls and what they have achieved by playing such outstanding indoor hockey. Qualifying for a National Finals and actually winning the finals are two hugely different things and every single member of the squad is a real credit to the School. For us to be competing, let alone beating some of these big schools on the biggest stage is incredible and I am delighted for everyone involved.
